Afrobeats
The Sound of Africa — Broadcasting from London to the World
What is Afrobeats?
Afrobeat did not begin in the 2000s. It was built in Lagos in the late 1960s by Fela Kuti and his drummer and musical director Tony Allen. They fused highlife, jazz, funk and traditional Yoruba rhythms into something that had never existed before — and they did it with purpose. This was not entertainment for the mainstream. It was resistance music. Anti-colonial. Anti-military government. Aligned with the same currents as the civil rights movement and pan-African liberation struggles. Fela’s Kalakuta Republic was a commune and a studio and a declaration. Tony Allen’s drumming created a rhythmic language that influenced music globally. That is where this starts.
Running alongside and out of the same African street tradition — Kuduro emerged from Luanda, Angola in the early 1990s. Raw, fast, electronic, built on the energy of the Musseques. Fuji music carries its own root — Yoruba, percussion-driven, developed from ajisari wake-keeping music, built without studio polish. Pure rhythm and voice. And out of London’s West African underground has come something NMC calls Osugbo Noir — a dark, layered sound drawing on Yoruba spiritual aesthetics, the Osugbo tradition, and the weight of the diaspora experience. None of this is chart music. None of this is made for label approval. NMC Signal carries all of it — the original wave, the Angolan underground, the Yoruba street tradition, the London diaspora dark sound — music that belongs to the communities that made it, not to any contract.
Who NMC Signal Plays
NMC Signal does not play artists signed to major labels or under commercial contracts. We play independent, unsigned artists — people who own their music and answer to no one but their audience. Street artists. Diaspora artists. Artists building something real without industry infrastructure behind them. If your sound is raw, honest, and yours — this is where it belongs.
