What is Resistance Music?

Resistance is the oldest reason music has ever existed. Long before it became product, sound was how communities held themselves together under pressure — colonial pressure, military pressure, the pressure of being made to feel that your existence was a problem. Fela Kuti built his entire life’s work on this. His music was not protest in the polite sense. It was confrontation. His compound was raided, his mother was thrown from a window by Nigerian soldiers in 1977. He kept recording.

The same thread runs through Kuduro in Angola — music made under and after the civil war. Through South African township sound made under apartheid. Through grime in London, where working-class West African kids made music on cheap equipment because nothing else was available to them. NMC Signal carries this lineage. Forty tracks in this category. Every one of them made outside the system.

Who NMC Signal Plays

Artists who have something to say and say it without permission. No label approval. No chart ambition. If you are making music that pushes back against something real — this is where it sits.
