Afro-Drill
What is Afro-Drill?
Drill came from Chicago — from the South Side, from artists documenting life in conditions of extreme poverty and violence in the early 2010s. It reached London around 2012 and landed in South London: Brixton, Peckham, Harlesden. London drill became its own thing — darker production, different cadences, a specific UK street energy. The London drill scene was shaped significantly by artists of West African and Caribbean backgrounds.
Afro-Drill is the explicit fusion — drill’s dark, minor-key, bass-heavy production architecture with Afrobeat melodic sensibility and African language cadences folded into the MCing. It is a London sound. It is what happens when two different traditions of documenting marginalised experience — Chicago drill and West African street music — meet in a housing estate in South London.
