Afro-Grime
What is Afro-Grime?
Grime emerged in East London in the early 2000s — from Bow, Deptford, Lewisham, Harlesden. Fast MCing over dark, minimal electronic production. It was made by working-class kids with cheap equipment and no industry connections, and it documented exactly where they came from. From the beginning, grime was shaped by West African diaspora communities. The cultural material was already there — the cadences, the humour, the anger, the reference points — all of it inflected by Nigerian, Ghanaian, Sierra Leonean backgrounds.
Afro-Grime is what happens when those two things are made explicit. Afrobeat rhythm structures meeting grime’s dark electronic architecture. Yoruba or Pidgin cadences inside grime flows. London music that does not hide where its parents came from. NMC Signal is based in London and this genre is part of the station’s identity.
